David Frank Sears

M.Sc. Mechanical Engineering (Heat Transfer) 1984.
Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

David F. Sears joined AECL in 1984 November to assist with the fabrication development and irradiation testing of LEU fuels for the NRU and NRX reactors at Chalk River Laboratories. From 1986-1990 he was Project Manager for LEU Fuel Development at AECL, with responsibility for selecting the reference fuel for NRU, qualification testing and performance verification. He also had responsibility for manufacturing process scale-up from the lab to commercial production, and the associated technology transfer to the nuclear fuel fabrication facility (NFFF) at Chalk River.

In 1990 he assumed responsibility for CANFLEX fuel fabrication development, irradiation testing in NRU, and post-irradiation examinations (PIE). CANFLEX is an advanced fuel bundle design for the CANDU reactor. D.F. Sears was Project Manager for the CANFLEX Mk I and Mk III fuel irradiations in NRU, and PIE examinations at Chalk River and Whiteshell. He also managed the post-irradiation examinations of lead fuel bundles from a demonstration irradiation in the CANDU reactor at Pt. Lepreau, New Brunswick.

Currently D.F. Sears is the Program Manager for AECL’s programs in Research Reactor Fuel and Physics. He led the MAPLE target qualification irradiations in NRU and post-irradiation examinations in the hot cells. He is the Section Head, Research Reactor Fuel Development, with responsibility for developing LEU fuels, including UMo fuel for current and future reactors.
